X-Ray and Ultrasound

Taking scan

Accurate pet diagnostic imaging

When your pet is unwell or something is not right, we turn to diagnostic imaging for answers. Our clinic is equipped with modern digital  technology, a dedicated dental radiology suite, and access to expert ultrasound diagnostics, so we can assess what’s happening inside with precision and care.

We walk you through every step from what we’re looking for, to what we find, and what it means for your pet.

Our approach isn’t just about using advanced tools, it’s about interpreting what we see in the context of your pet’s whole health picture.

In-house X-rays and Advanced imaging team

Most imaging is done right here at Edgeworth. For more complex scans, like heart and detailed abdominal imaging, we partner with Newcastle Veterinary Ultrasound, an independent mobile ultrasound service. They visit our clinic weekly to perform echocardiography, guided biopsies, and in-depth internal scans.

This relationship means your pet can access specialist care in a familiar, trusted environment, with no extra travel or stress.

Diagnostic care for every kind of pet

We image dogs, cats, and exotic pets alike. Our technology allows for clear views of:

  • Bones, joints, and fractures
  • Chest and lung concerns
  • Dental disease and oral structures
  • Bladder, bowel and internal organs
  • Heart health (via ultrasound and ECG)
  • Masses, fluid build-up, and internal pain

We also carry radiographic contrast media to enhance views of specific systems, like the gastrointestinal or urinary tract.

Sedation and monitoring: Always pet-first

Some pets can lie still enough for images with minimal restraint. Others, especially anxious or wriggly ones, may need sedation or light anaesthesia to keep them safe and comfortable.

A dedicated vet nurse closely monitors all imaging. Your pet’s vital signs are tracked continuously, and their comfort comes first.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between X-rays and ultrasounds for pets?

X-rays are best for bones and dense structures. Ultrasounds provide clearer images of soft tissue organs like the heart, liver, intestines and bladder. We’ll help you choose the right one based on your pet’s needs.

Does my pet need sedation or anaesthesia for X-rays and ultrasounds?

Sometimes. If your pet is anxious, painful, or needs to stay still for detailed images, we’ll use safe sedation or general anaesthesia. You’ll be guided through every step.

Do you offer pet diagnostic imaging for exotic animals?

Yes. Our dental X-ray camera and experience with small species allow us to image birds, reptiles, rodents, and pocket pets accurately.

Who performs ultrasounds at Edgeworth?

We partner with Newcastle Veterinary Ultrasound, a highly respected independent provider. Their mobile team visits our clinic weekly to deliver expert-level scans and reports.

Can I see the digital X-Ray results straight away?

In many cases, yes. Digital X-rays provide immediate images. Ultrasound findings are usually discussed on the same day, with follow-up as needed.
