End of Life Care

End of Life Care: Gentle support for your pet’s final chapter

We know how deeply your pet is woven into your life, and how heartbreaking it is to think about saying goodbye. When the time comes, we’re here to walk beside you with calm, compassionate guidance and the reassurance of a team that truly cares.

At Edgeworth Animal Medical Centre, we don’t just care for animals, we care for the people who love them.

That means giving you the time, space, and support to make decisions that feel right for your pet and your family.

Thoughtful, individualised care

There’s no roadmap for this part of the journey. Some families come to us when a beloved pet is showing signs of decline. Others are already facing tough decisions and need help making sense of what comes next.

Wherever you are, we’ll listen, talk you through all the options, and give you honest, gentle advice, without pressure. We’ll help you understand your pet’s quality of life and what to expect as illness or age progresses. If palliative care or comfort measures are appropriate, we’ll support you in making a plan.

Our role is to advocate for your pet’s comfort and dignity, and to support your family with empathy and clarity.

Peaceful, respectful euthanasia

When euthanasia becomes the kindest option, we create an environment that prioritises calm, comfort, and love. We offer both in-clinic and at-home euthanasia visits, depending on what feels right for your pet and your family.

Our process is explained clearly beforehand. We take our time. We allow for quiet moments, gentle goodbyes, and as much presence or privacy as you need.

Aftercare & cremation services

We partner with Newcastle and Hunter Pet Crematorium to provide respectful aftercare. A range of urns and keepsake options are available, including new choices for pocket pets like birds, rats, and guinea pigs.

You’re welcome to discuss cremation options with us at any stage, there’s no rush.

We also offer guidance if you’d prefer a private burial or want to plan ahead.

Grief and emotional support

Grieving the loss of a pet looks different for everyone. For some, it’s quiet and gradual. For others, it’s raw and overwhelming. However it unfolds, it’s real, and you don’t have to navigate it alone.

We can connect you with grief and bereavement services, including counselling that honours the unique bond between people and their pets. Whether you need support now or later, it’s here when you’re ready.

At Edgeworth Animal Medical Centre, we’re here to help you honour your pet’s life with dignity, care, and compassion. And if you’re unsure about what comes next, or just need someone to listen, we’re here for that too. Contact us today for support and guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know when it’s time to say goodbye to my pet?

There’s no perfect answer, but signs include persistent pain, laboured breathing, not eating, or no longer enjoying favourite activities. We’ll help assess your pet’s comfort with honesty and care.

Can we have the euthanasia done at home?

Yes. Edgeworth Vet and Animal Medical Centre now offer home visits. This is your pet can be surrounded by familiar smells, soft beds, and loved ones during their final moments.

What happens after my pet passes?

We’ll talk you through cremation options, including urns and memorial keepsakes. You can take time to decide, there’s no pressure.

Can my other pets be present?

Yes, if it’s safe and you feel it’s appropriate. Many pets seem to understand and benefit from being present. At Edgeworth Vet and Animal Medical Centre,  we will guide you based on your individual situation.
